One of the most fundamental aspects of website optimisation is ensuring that the pages within your website are as accessible as possible to the search engines. It's not only the home page of a website that can be indexed, but also the internal pages within a site's structure. The internal pages of a site often contain important content such as products, services or general information, and therefore can be uniquely optimised for their related terms.
Search engines use ‘robots’ to find content on the web for inclusion in their index. A robot is a computer programme that follows the hyperlinks on a web page, which is termed ‘crawling’. When a robot finds a block of text or a document it reads and includes the contents within the search engine's index, then follows the next link it can find and continues the process of crawling and indexing. With this in mind, it becomes clear that the navigational structure of a website is very important in getting as many pages as possible indexed.
The best links to use from a Search Engine perspective are generic HTML text links, meaning Flash links, and some styles of dropdown menus will all be inaccessible to robots.
A fantastic way of ensuring the search engines will index all the pages in your website is by adding a Sitemap. A Sitemap is best described as an index page – or a list of links to all of the pages within your website contained on one page.
